# Motivation

Significance of the Problem and Opportunity

The blockchain and distributed ledger technology (DLT) industry is experiencing rapid growth, which means that an increasing number of people will be using these technologies on a daily basis, often without even realizing it. Blockchain has a wide range of applications, use cases, and services which bring high level of security and trust to untrusted parties that need to transact over the internet. DLT accounts often hold real monetary value such as NFTs, Tokens, Cryptocurrency and other digital Assets, making them a target for hackers. Therefore, it is important to implement effective account protection methods, such as secure hardware wallet devices, to safeguard against potential threats.

One of the most significant advantages of crypto is that users have full control over their accounts and can make transactions at any time without the need for approval from a bank or other authority. However, this also means that it is crucial for users to be responsible for the security of their accounts, as the theft of a private key or unauthorized access to an account could result in the loss of all funds without the possibility of recovery. To mitigate this risk, many people are turning to hardware wallets, which allow users to securely manage their cryptocurrency accounts without exposing their private keys. This is especially important for those who hold large amounts of cryptocurrency, as the use of a cell phone-based wallet may not provide sufficient security for such a high value. Hardware wallets are only used when a user needs to transfer funds or sign special transactions, and they are disconnected immediately after use to further enhance security.

The hardware wallet industry is still in its early stages, and there is significant room for improvement. Some major issues Citadel Wallet is working on addressing include:

* **Limited Feature Support:** Wallets have limitations in terms of storage capacity, performance, and the features they can support on various networks. Hardware wallets often try to support as many networks as possible, but this limits the number of DLT features they can support. On the other hand, Citadel Wallet prioritizes supporting the most advanced DLT technology Hedera, and provides full support for it. In the future, simply sending crypto will not be sufficient and it is important to have a wallet that can support advanced DLT features.
* **Security:** The most commonly used hardware wallets in the cryptocurrency industry often utilize secure elements with a lower CC EAL5+ safety certification level. These wallets also typically utilize generic microcontrollers, which act as a bridge between the secure element and the external world and the user. However, these generic microcontrollers can potentially be exploited by hackers as an attack vector, allowing them to access the device and potentially sign unauthorized transactions.
* **Ease of Use:** Hardware wallet solutions with small sizes often come with very small screens that are not touch-sensitive and have limited buttons for interaction. These wallets can be difficult to use due to their non-intuitive user interfaces and can be time-consuming to navigate and configure. On the other hand, larger size screens offer a more comfortable experience, but they come in the form of larger devices that consume more power and have shorter battery lifetimes. It is unlikely that users will want to carry another phone-sized device in addition to their smartphones, limiting the environments in which these wallets can be used.
* **Battery Lifetime** – By implementing the latest low power microcontroller technologies, optimizing hardware and software design, and incorporating innovative mechanical and hardware design techniques, the power consumption of hardware wallets can be significantly improved. Additionally, using high capacity batteries with compact sizes can also contribute to longer battery life. These strategies will help to maximize the efficiency and lifespan of hardware wallets operating on battery.

The Citadel Wallet aims to apply lessons learned from previous generations of hardware wallet technologies to create a secure, reliable, and user-friendly experience for interacting with the Hedera public network. It serves as a modern companion device that allows users to access decentralized applications and securely sign transactions. # Why Hedera

Hedera Network's Characteristics

Hedera is a distributed ledger technology (DLT) platform that aims to offer fast, secure, and fair transaction consensus for a variety of Enterprise and Web 3 use cases. Some key features and advantages of the Hedera network include:

1. **Speed:** Hedera can process hundreds of thousands of transactions per second, making it the fastest DLT in the world. Currently network is throttled down to 10k+ Tps with plans to raise the throttle in the future as more applications onboard and TPS starts to rise.
2. **Security:** Hedera uses a novel consensus algorithm called "hashgraph" which is based on a type of directed acyclic graph (DAG) and is designed to be secure and resilient against all types of attacks. Hashgraph consensus is the only public DLT network which was able to achieve the highest form of security possible called Asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerance (ABFT).
3. **Finality:** Because of Hashgraph consensus algorithm, Hedera network is able to achieve complete transaction finality within 3-5 seconds. Competing blockchain networks on the other hand are probabilistic, which means transactions are never 100% confirmed but users become more certain over time that transactions won't be reverted.
4. **Leaderless:** Hedera network is leaderless, which means no single node determines or dictates the order of transactions at any point in time for rest of nodes in the network. All nodes come to the same consensus independently which makes the network resliliant against DDoS attacks. &#x20;
5. **Fairness:** Hedera's consensus algorithm is designed to ensure that all transactions are processed in a fair and deterministic manner and each message or transaction submitted to the network is fairly ordered and timestamped by all participating nodes independently.
6. **Cost:** Transaction fees on Hedera network are extremely low and on average cost $0.0001 per transaction. They are also fixed for each transaction type and are pegged to a US Dollar but paid in HBAR. Hedera network is designed to provide a sustainable and predictable fee model to Enterprises and business who can plan their expenses ahead of time regardless of HBAR price volatility.&#x20;
7. **Governance:** Hedera is a decentralized platform that is operated by a consortium of trusted organizations called "governance council members." These members play a crucial role in the operation and development of the platform, but they do not have sole control over it. There will ever be up to 39 Council Members in Hedera network, which are term limited to 2 times and 3 Years each terms. Besides Council nodes Hedera network will add more community nodes over time and eventually opening up the network to anyone who would like to run a node.
8. **Energy:** Hedera network has been recognized as the most energy-efficient public distributed ledger technology (DLT) network in the world, according to a study conducted by University College London (UCL). This makes it a highly sustainable and environmentally friendly option for businesses and individuals seeking a secure and efficient means of conducting digital transactions.
9. **Flexibility:** Hedera supports a variety of use cases including DeFi, NFTs, Gaming, Tokenization, Payments, CBDC, Data Integrity, Digital Identity, Stablecoins, Supply Chain, IoT and more. It also offers APIs and SDKs that make it easy for developers to build on the platform.
10. **Compliance:** Hedera is designed to meet regulatory requirements and has partnerships with various organizations and agencies to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations under different jurisdictions.
11. **Scalability:** Hedera is designed to scale as the number of users and transactions on the platform increases, making it suitable for large-scale deployments. Initially network will scale vertically by increasing numbers of transactions per second processed by a genesis shard. # Wallet Initial Setup

### Power on Citadel Wallet

Press and hold the left button for at least 2 seconds and the device will boot up.&#x20;

Press Initial Setup and application will jump to next page!

### Create a New Wallet

After selecting the Initial Setup, 2 options will be displayed:

Wallet display is touch screen so select one of the options provided. Since this section is focused on creating a new wallet, you will select the New Wallet option.

### Choose a Wallet Type

There are 2 Wallet types available on Citadel Wallet:

Touch select the preferred option to move to the next step.

### Add Passphrase (Advanced and Optional)

Next you will be given an opportunity to select a passphrase option. Passphrase adds an extra layer of protection to your 12 or 24 Mnemonic Phrase and will be inputted  yourself compared to the Mnemonic Words generated by the wallet itself.

> Passphrase will be required along with the mnemonic words to recover your account. Even if you have the 12 or 24 word mnemonics but have forgotten or lost your Passphrase you won't be able to recover your keys. So when using this option make sure your are familiar with how it works.

### Create a New PIN

Input a 6 digit PIN on the touch pin pad displayed and press the enter touch button under 9.

Verify the new PIN by inputting it again on the next page.

### Record the Mnemonic Phrase

12 or 24 word Mnemonic Phrase will be generated by the wallet and displayed on the screen.

Scroll the screen using touch to see all the words.

Once scrolled all the way to the bottom of the page, you will notice an icon pops up on the right bottom corner of the display indicating right physical OK button can be pressed to move to the next page.

### Verify Mnemonic Phrase

On the next page you will be prompted to verify some of the words randomly from the phrase presented to make sure user has recorded the words. 4 options will be provided to choose the specific word from:

Once selection is made, press the OK button to move to the next word:

After successfully verifying the words, wallet will be created and ready to sign Hedera transactions.

### Import Passphrase (!Advanced and Optional)

If you had selected Yes for the Passphrase, You will be prompted to input up to 12 letter passphrase in 2 pages. Each page will allow to import 6 letters and numbers.

On the first page, scroll each box until you have selected all 6 letters/numbers:

Once all 6 have been selected the Icon to press the OK button will pop up. Press and move to the next page:

### Verify Passphrase (!Advanced and Optional)

Verification of the passphrase is critical because the whole account recovery will depend on it. Therefore you will be prompted to repeat the same steps and re-enter your passphrase to verify you imported the right letters/words. So follow same steps above to re-enter the passphrase to complete the Wallet Initial Setup:

# Wallet Recover

### Important Mnemonic Phrase Note

It is very important to record the Mnemonic Phrase generated during the [Wallet Initial Setup](/getting-started/wallet-initial-setup) on a recovery card provided in the Citadel Wallet package.

Store the Recovery Card somewhere really safe that only you know about.

<mark style="color:red;">!If the Hardware Wallet is broken or stolen and you don't have the Mnemonic Phrase you cannot recover your account and will loose all your assets.</mark>

### Account Recovery Steps:

### Power on Citadel Wallet

Press and hold the left button for at least 2 seconds to power on your new device.

### Import Passphrase (!Advanced)

### Create a New PIN

Input a 6 digit PIN on the touch pin pad displayed and press the enter touch button under 9.

### Import the Mnemonic Phrase

Import every single word from your Recovery Phrase in order following the easy to use UI on the wallet.

For each word you will be prompted to select the first 3 letters if the word. Once the letters are selected word section on the page will filter down to few possible options to choose from.

Once the word is selected, OK button will pop up. Press OK to move to the next page to input the next word:

### Import Passphrase (!Advanced and Optional)

If you had selected Yes for the Passphrase, You will next be prompted to input up to 12 letter passphrase in 2 pages. Each page will allow to import 6 letters and numbers.

### Account Imported Successfully

When all the words in the Recovery Phrase have been imported, the corresponding account keys will be regenerated and stored in the Secure Element. Wallet is ready to pair and use.

# Wallet Settings

You can find the Settings button on Citadel Wallet display after [Initial Setup](/getting-started/wallet-initial-setup) is completed. It is located on the main page after accessing the device by inputting the PIN.

# Change PIN

Once the 6 Digit PIN is set during the device setup process, it cannot be changed. The only way to change the PIN is to factory reset the full device.

# Wipe Keys

Device Wipe is for resetting your Citadel Wallet to factory state. This means the Citadel Wallet will be in the same condition as if newly purchased.

Once you perform the Wipe function, your whole wallet will be deleted including all your private keys.

Select the Wipe Keys option from Settings Page and Press OK:

To Wipe Keys, you must enter your PIN, read the warning message displayed and press OK button to confirm.

First you will be prompted to Input your Device Access PIN:

Following steps show how to connect your hardware wallet with HashPack very first time, right after [Initial Setup](/getting-started/wallet-initial-setup) of the wallet. When pairing the hardware wallet with HashPack very first time you will also need to&#x20;

Use the USB Cable provided or other standard USB type C cable to connect the Citadel Wallet with the your Desktop or Laptop PC.

On the PC side open your Google Chrome browser and you should see the WebUSB Citadel Wallet device automatically detected.

### Pair with Hashpack video Tutorial

Once Citadel wallet is connected to your PC and USB device has been recognized, open your hashpack extension and follow these steps to create a new account ID for your Citadel Wallet on Hedera network.

**Reminder:** If the wallet has already been setup and account created with HashPack then **"Import existing wallet"** option can be used. In that case process of pairing is much faster because HashPack will automatically detect your Account ID on Hedera network and no more steps will be required in order to be ready to sign transactions.

### Select Connect USB Option

Separate window will pop up asking to select the interface of communication. Select USB in this case.

### Select the Citadel Wallet WebUSB device

Google Chrome should've already detected the Citadel Wallet. After clicking "Connect USB" a window will pop up showing the device. Select it and click connect.

### Share Public Key with HashPack

HashPack will request the Public Key from already initialized hardware wallet to be able to create an Account ID on Hedera network.

### Select the Staking Node

During the first time pairing process HashPack also asks to select the Hedera Council Node you would like to stake your HBARs to. Simply select the node from options provided and move to the next step.

Reminder: Staked node can be changed after this process as well since Citadel Wallet supports Hedera native staking natively. So there is no need to worry about being stuck with a specific node if you change your mind in the future.

### Account ID Created and Ready to Sign

After this last step HashPack will request an Account ID from Hedera network according to your hardware wallet public key. In a few moments wallet Account ID will be created and HashPack pairing completed. Now you can fund your newly created account with some HBAR to start using it.


# Supported Services

After following the steps to [Initial Setup](/getting-started/wallet-initial-setup) and [Pair your Citadel Wallet](/getting-started/pair-with-hashpack) with HashPack you are ready to sign Hedera network transactions.

### Fund Your New Hedera Account

First make sure to note down the Account ID created by HashPack for your hardware wallet.

Hedera Account IDs have the following format: 0.0.xxxx

Before you can sign any transactions make sure to fund your new Account by sending some HBARs to it. All Hedera transactions require gas fees to be paid in HBAR.

Once Citadel Wallet account is funded, you can navigate Hashpack wallet as before with only difference being that, every time you need to sign a transaction, approval will happen through Citadel Wallet itself. The reason is: the account private key is not held on Hashpack anymore but in a more secure offline hardware wallet.

# Firmware Update

### General Info About Firmware Update

Whenever new feature support is added or bug fixes have been made, a new firmware update will be available on our website for installation.

Firmware Update doesn't require recovery of the wallet since keys are securely stored in the Secure Element.

After firmware update, you cannot go back to the older version of the firmware.

To check if new version of the firmware is available go to app.citadelwallet.io website. Compare the latest version available on the website with the version installed on the hardware wallet [Info](/getting-started/wallet-settings/info) section.

### How to Perform the Update

Follow these steps to perform Firmware Update securely:

1. Connect Citadel Wallet to your PC with a USB C cable
2. Power On the wallet and enter your PIN for the USB port to show up on PC
3. Open Google Chrome browser and go to app.citadelwallet.io
4. On the website click on Connect button
5. Hardware Wallet will ask you to approve the connection
6. Once Connected, you will be prompted to click on Update
7. Secure Update will take about <mark style="color:red;">5</mark> minutes&#x20;

Firmware Update website will be available when very first update is ready


# Wallet PIN

Wallet Access PIN is created at the time of [Wallet Initial Setup](/getting-started/wallet-initial-setup) or [Wallet Recover](/getting-started/wallet-recover)

It is very important to remember the PIN and never loose it, otherwise you will loose access to the hardware wallet and will have to get a new wallet to recover your account.

> PIN will be allowed to input incorrectly only 5 times. If PIN is inputted incorrectly sixth time, hardware wallet Secure Element will be locked and you will never be able to access that specific hardware wallet.

When inputted correctly, you will be taken to the Home Page where you can sign transactions or select [Wallet Settings](/getting-started/wallet-settings)and navigate through the options provided.

## What is Native Staking?

Hedera Native Staking is a process by which users can earn rewards for holding and staking Hedera's native cryptocurrency HBAR to the network. This allows users to participate in continued decentralization and help maintain the security and integrity of the Hedera network by staking their HBAR to Governing Council nodes they trust. Staked HBAR will be used to vote on governance decisions within the Hedera network.

One of Hedera's primary network services is Hedera Token Service - HTS which allows to create and manage Fungible and Non-Fungible Tokens. ## What Other Services Does Hedera Support?

Hedera network supports many more services that are not available on other general public blockchain networks thanks to its revolutionary consensus algorithm: Hashgraph. # Touch

The Citadel Wallet display supports capacitive touch for enhanced user experience and interaction with the secure device. With touch support, users are able to much easier navigate through the wallet application and make the overall experience much more enjoyable and user friendly. For security purposes, only Power On/Off and Transaction Approve functions are not supported through touch and are instead activated through pressing of physical buttons.

The integration of both touch interface and push-button greatly enhances the user's ability to efficiently manage their assets while maintaining the utmost security for their device. This smart design allows for a seamless and user-friendly experience while ensuring the safety of their valuable assets.

Capacitive touch supported by the wallet is very responsive and precise.


# Buttons

Citadel Wallet integrates two physical push buttons to control power and approve transaction functions. More information on each button can be found below:

## Power Button:

The Power Button is responsible for turning the Citadel Wallet hardware on and off. When the device is completely off, the internal rechargeable battery is completely isolated from the electronics to prevent draining. To use the device, the user must press and hold the Power button for at least 2 seconds. Once the LCD backlight turns on, the button can be released and the device will boot up.

## Approve Button:

To approve a transaction using the Citadel Wallet, a user must first read the transaction information displayed on the wallet's screen. The approval process can then be initiated by pressing and holding the Approve Button for a few seconds. This button is responsible for approving transactions that are submitted to the wallet by a software wallet or dApp connected via USB, BLE, or NFC interfaces. By following these steps, users can easily and securely process transactions through the Citadel Wallet.


# Hardware Spec


# Microprocessor

Built-in hardware level security is crucial in developing a secure wallet solution. Citadel Wallet is utilizing a microcontroller based on a newly released ARM Cortex-M33 core architecture developed for IoT and embedded applications that require high security and low power consumption. Advanced dual core technology allows separation of secure and non-secure applications running on the same chip without risking security. The processor has a built in TrustZone security extension for hardware-enforced isolation, a coprocessor interface, memory protection units, and a floating-point unit. The Cortex-M33 processor with TrustZone and memory protection is PSA certified providing security assurance for applications that require high levels of protection.

The Cortex-M33 microprocessor achieves an optimal blend between real-time determinism, energy efficiency, software productivity, and system security which opens the door for many new applications and opportunities across diverse markets including blockchains. M33 microprocessor is based on the ARMv8-M architecture which reduces the complexity of developing secure embedded solutions that scale all the way from the smallest IoT device to complex SoCs. When M33 core is in Secure state, it can access both Secure and Non-secure memories. If the ARMv8-M architecture with Security Extension is implemented, the processor starts up in Secure state. When the core is in Non-secure state, it can access Non-secure memories only.

Secure core will allow to use a TRNG (True Random Number Generator) block to generate truly random FIPS 140-2 compliant private/public key pairs required for cryptocurrency account creation. MPU (Memory Protection Unit) and KMU (Key Management Unit) will allow secure storage of keys and management of them for different needs such as encrypted wireless communication, off chip memory communication and handling of public keys. Secure core of the microcontroller will interact with off chip Secure Element for submitting messages that need to be signed and returned.

Non-Secure core of the microcontroller will be responsible for running the general application for the wallet communication with the PC or mobile device through USB, BLE or NFC. It will handle user inputs through touch or button user interfaces and drive the LCD.


# Secure Element

Secure Element utilized in Citadel Wallet has an independent Common Criteria EAL 6+ security certification up to OS level and supports both RSA & ECC asymmetric cryptographic algorithms with high key length and future proof ECC curves. Latest security measures in this secure element protect the chip against invasive and non-invasive attacks. For a comparison, Ledger hardware wallets are certified to only up to EAL 5+ security level.

Secure element is specifically designed for blockchain, secure IoT, government ID and secure key storage applications. It requires a host controller, which will communicate with the secure element through I2C interface and make key operation requests such as key creation, message signing and verifying. It generates the private/public key pairs for asymmetric encryptions internally to the secure element and private keys never leave the chip. Some of the major features of the Secure Element include:

* CC EAL 6+ and SESIP4 certified HW and OS
* FIPS 140-2 certified platform with Security Level 3 and Security Level 4 related to Physical Security of the HW
* Effective protection against advanced attacks, including Power Analysis and Fault Attacks
* Multiple logical and physical protection layers, including metal shielding, end-to-end encryption, memory encryption, tamper detection
* RSA and ECC asymmetric cryptography algorithms, future proof curves and high key length, e.g. Brainpool, Edwards and Montgomery curves
* AES and DES symmetric cryptographic algorithms for encryption and decryption
* HMAC, CMAC, SHA-1, SHA-224/256/384/512 operations
* Extended temperature range for industrial applications (-40 °C to +105 °C)

Hedera accounts require ED25519, RSA-3072 or ECDSA cryptographic pairs for account creation and interaction with the network. Secure Element used in Citadel Wallet support all options.


# Storage

To add support more features in the future in the wallet additional external storage space might be required. Having larger storage will also allow for more graphical objects, ability to store images for NFTs and design a better user experience. External Flash Memory will be used to store non-secure applications only and will never store private keys associated with cryptocurrency accounts.

All communications between Secure Microcontroller and the off-chip flash memory will be handled through OTF (On the Fly) encryption, which means data that exits microcontroller through the communication interface will be already encrypted and when retrieved will be decrypted in the microcontroller. AES keys are stores in the microcontroller and will never leave the secure domain.

After initial drop of 2,292 NFTs which will be minted during Citadel Hardware Wallet Pre-Order round, rest of 7,708 Collectibles will be dropped in phases of lower rarities from 200 down to 50 per drop until all 10,000 have been distributed.

Citadel Hardware Wallet initial Pre-Orders will be conducted through GOTC NFT sales. NFTs will be valued at the retail price of the hardware wallet or at discounted prices for specific Hedera NFT holders or second and third tier GOTC NFT purchasers.

People who participate in the NFT Pre-Order will basically get the NFTs with so many utilities for free because they only pay the cost of the hardware wallet itself. During the Pre-Orders, 3 GOTC Knights will be available for sale: Ice Knight, Fire Knight and Nature Knight. Golden Knight can be claimed by users who purchase all 3 abovementioned Knights.
